Our
Ministers
Our ministers are the Rev. Karl Kopp, Ph.D.
and the Rev. Jane Kopp, Ph.D.
Each has an earned doctorate from the University
of California at Berkeley.
Karl received his undergraduate degree from Yale, and Jane hers from Brown
University. Jane also holds
a Master's Degree from Cambridge University
in England.
Both ministers are published writers (spiritual life and envelopment, poetry,
essays, fiction, drama) and have taught English and American literature and
Creative Writing at various colleges and universities (the University of
Maine, the University of New Mexico, the University of Albuquerque, Kenyon
College, the American University of Beirut, Pierce College in Athens, Greece)
before entering the ministry together in the late 1970's. Both are
former editors (and founders) of the Red Earth Press in Albuquerque.
Married since 1969, they have two children.
Our Board
The church is governed by a
Board of Directors, chaired by our current President
Pamela Geddy. Drawn
from among the membership of the Church, the Board sets policy, plans the
budget, and works closely with the ministers in all areas of Church
operations. The present members are Pamela Geddy, Bruce Kraynak, Cat
DeRose, Katy Kurtz, Judy Faught, Suzi Thomas and Mike Serruto.
Our Members
The regular members of the
First Divine Science Church of Denver come from many different backgrounds
and walks of life. Most were raised in other faiths—Jewish,
Catholic, Protestant—or in no faith at all. Their occupations are
extraordinarily varied. We have, for example, a number of Denver public
school teachers, a software engineer, a professional in ballet production, a
certified public accountant, a manager of city government, a violin maker, a
professional editor, several registered nurses, a plumber, several attorneys,
a stock broker, an architect, two librarians, and a sizable number of
self-employed people with small businesses of their own. Members and
friends travel to attend our services and other events from all over
metropolitan Denver—Wheat Ridge, Thornton, Lakewood, Aurora, and Parker—as well as from
Boulder and Colorado Springs. We are bonded by
common spiritual and cultural interests rather than other kinds of
demographic factors.
Our Outside Helpers
The outside lecturers, musicians, and others who share their thoughts and
talents with us are an important part of our spiritual community. Among many
others, the following nationally-known persons have taught or spoken at the
Church: Roy Eugene Davis,
spiritual leader and disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda, Matthew Fox, founder of
Creation Spirituality, Rev. John S. Spong, controversial Episcopal bishop,
and author of such books as Rescuing the
Bible from Fundamentalism , Jungians John
Sanford, Linda
Leonard and
Robert Moore , Larry
Dossey, MD , Joan Borysenko,
Ph.D., Pir Vilayat Khan, Head of the Sufi
Order, and John McDougall, MD,
physician and nutritionist, and most recently Swiss mystic and healer Manuel Schoch . They also include
local performers such as mezzo-soprano Marcia Regonetti, singer Eli Owens,
and the Queen City Jazz Band.
Our Visitors
Every year, thousands of
visitors attend one or more of the many events at the Church, ranging from
classes and seminars to concerts and plays.
